HIFU vs Surgical Facelift: Which to Choose Based on Your Age and Needs

We compare HIFU and the surgical facelift so you can make an informed decision based on your age, type of sagging, and lifestyle.

What Is HIFU and How Does It Rejuvenate the Face?

HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is the most advanced non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatment available today. It works by delivering ultrasonic energy to the deep layers of the skin—including the SMAS, the same layer addressed in a surgical facelift—stimulating new collagen production.

At our clinic in Bávaro we perform this procedure in a single 60-90 minute session, with no general anesthesia and no downtime.

Pros and Cons of the Surgical Facelift

The surgical facelift offers more dramatic, immediate results, ideal for severe sagging or significant excess skin. Its effect can last 8-10 years.

  • Pros: A more powerful result, correction of true excess skin
  • Cons: General anesthesia, 2-4 weeks of recovery, scarring, higher cost, and surgical risks

For many patients who travel to Punta Cana, the recovery period interferes with their daily life or their vacation.

Who Is a Candidate for Each Procedure?

HIFU is ideal for: Women aged 30-55 with mild to moderate sagging, expression lines, a drooping facial contour, or dull skin. It is also perfect for those seeking maintenance or prevention.

The surgical facelift is indicated for: Patients with significant excess skin, severe sagging, or who want the maximum possible result with a single procedure. Generally from 55-60 years of age onward.

Results: When Do They Appear and How Long Do They Last?

With HIFU, results are progressive: they become noticeable at 30 days and reach their peak at 3-6 months as the new collagen matures. The duration is 12 to 24 months. With annual maintenance sessions, many patients avoid surgery indefinitely.

The surgical facelift shows immediate results (after recovery) and can last up to a decade, although it does not stop the aging process.

My Recommendation as a Specialist

At Med Luxe we assess each case individually. For most of my patients between 35 and 55 in Bávaro, HIFU is the smartest option: real results, no surgical risks, and no time away from daily life.

When sagging is severe, we openly discuss whether HIFU alone will be enough or whether combining it with other treatments or referring to surgery is the most honest option for the patient.
