Sun Protection Guide for the Caribbean: Everything You Need to Know
Living in Punta Cana without sunscreen is the biggest skincare mistake you can make. This guide explains why and how to protect yourself properly.
Why the Caribbean Sun Is Different
The Dominican Republic sits in the tropics, which means the sun strikes more perpendicularly than at higher latitudes, with UV radiation in the "very high" or "extreme" category for most of the year. This accelerates skin aging 3 to 5 times faster than in northern Europe, for example.
Photoaging, sun spots, and the risk of skin lesions are direct consequences of sun exposure without adequate protection.
How to Choose the Right Sunscreen
Not all sunscreens are the same. For the Caribbean climate, look for:
- SPF 50+ minimum for daily city use, and water-resistant SPF 50+ for the beach or outdoor activities
- Broad spectrum: UVA + UVB protection. UVA rays penetrate deeply and are the main cause of aging and dark spots, even on cloudy days
- A texture suited to your skin: Gel or fluid for oily skin, cream for dry skin
- Photostable: One that maintains its effectiveness after exposure to heat and light
The Application Rule Nobody Follows
Amount matters. Most people apply only 20 to 50% of the amount needed, which drastically reduces the real SPF. The rule is: 2 mg per cm² of skin, which is about half a teaspoon for the face alone.
And reapplication is just as important: every 2 hours of direct sun exposure, and after every swim in the sea or pool, even if the product says "water-resistant."
When the Sun Damage Is Already Done
If you already have sun spots, expression lines accentuated by the sun, or dull skin from exposure, it is not too late to act. At Med Luxe we offer specific treatments to reverse photodamage: chemical peels, iontophoretic vitamin C, antioxidant mesotherapy, and laser for dark spots.
But remember: any anti-spot treatment is ineffective without rigorous sun protection. The sun undoes in days what treatments take weeks to correct.
