Chemical Peels: Types, Benefits, and Which One Is Right for You
A complete guide to the different types of chemical peels available at Med Luxe, Bávaro: superficial, medium, and deep.
What Is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel involves the controlled application of acids that exfoliate the superficial layers of the skin, stimulating cell regeneration. The result is brighter, more even skin with a reduced appearance of dark spots, pores, and fine lines.
At Med Luxe we use premium formulations tailored to each patient's skin type and to the tropical climate of Bávaro, where sun exposure requires especially careful protocols.
Types of Peels: Superficial, Medium, and Deep
- Superficial (AHA/BHA): Glycolic, lactic, or salicylic acid. No downtime. Ideal for maintenance, radiance, and mild acne.
- Medium (TCA): Trichloroacetic acid at 20-35%. Peeling for 3-5 days. Indicated for dark spots, sun damage, and moderate wrinkles.
- Deep (Phenol): For very specific cases with intensive medical follow-up. Recovery of 2-3 weeks.
In our tropical setting, superficial and medium peels are the most widely used for their balance of effectiveness and safety.
Which Peel Is Right for Your Skin?
The choice depends on your skin type, tone, history of sun exposure, and main concern. Darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV-VI) require greater caution to avoid post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, something we pay special attention to given the diversity of our patients in Punta Cana.
During the consultation I perform a complete assessment with a Wood's lamp and skin analysis to recommend the safest and most effective protocol for your case.
Post-Peel Care in a Tropical Climate
Post-peel care in Bávaro requires special attention: the skin will be more sensitive and the Caribbean sun can cause dark spots if not properly protected. SPF 50+ sunscreen is mandatory, reapplied every 2 hours if there is sun exposure.
Avoid the beach, chlorinated pools, and additional facial treatments during the recovery period. The skin will renew itself progressively over the following 7-14 days.
